My Aunt Carrie asked me to paint her motorcycle helmet for her. When she told about it, she described that she wanted it to be a ribbon creating a ‘C&R’ that also formed a heart. In the background she wanted a cross. These elements are very important to her. On the front right hand side she asked if I could paint a bleeding heart. I created the illustration using 1 Shot paint, the same paint that is used on Hot Rod’s for pinstriping. The name doesn’t lie, you don’t have a lot of time to play or wipe it off if you make a mistake.

In the end, I think it turned out beautifully, feminine and personal to her.

I work for a company called JUMP Branding & Design Inc. full time. It’s a great company to work for. If you want to be really creative this is the place to be. We’re a company based on Toronto. I’m a senior graphic designer there. One of our clients are z-teca gourmet burritos. If you haven’t been there to eat yet, you MUST. Their food is so amazing and the restaurants they have are all really cool, modern and clean. JUMP also did the design for all the restaurants. Talk about having creative freedom. Every store we do for z-teca has a unique feel to it based on it’s location. I love working on anything for z-teca, the client is great to work with and loves to have some fun and push the limit’s of design.

On this piece, I had total creative freedom. I started with a sketch, supplied reference to colour, look, patterns, anything to get the point across. I also came up with the writing on this one. The idea was that monsters eat children, so by eating burritos the children are safe. Ah. Like a twisted fairy tale. Ha ha.

Once the sketch and concept was approved I started illustrating the piece in illustrator. Again, I can’t stress how fun it was to do this piece. I was going for something fun and youthful. Currently this piece is printed and at the York University z-teca location.

It’s worth it to go see a z-teca. The space is awesome, the art is great and the food is delicious.

Man, I’m craving a burrito now.

My wife’s father passed away in January of this year. I wanted to pay a tribute to him for her. When she first saw what I was doing she started to cry. I think that’s the best reaction that I could ask for, because I know that it really meant something to her.

This painting was done totally freehand, I just started painting on a blank canvas because I wanted to capture the emotion that I was feeling at that moment. It’s not exact but I think it captures his essence, a proud man.

I’ve been thinking about this idea for a while. I know it’s not an original idea, but hopefully I’ll be doing it a bit differently. The idea behind the logo was to show two sides of beer drinking. You either love it or hate it. Hence the smiley face and the character vomiting. I wanted a logo that would be fun but look professional. To me trying different beers is exciting and can be humorous based on the people involved.

When I searched endlessly through fonts, I realized I wanted to create something special. So I created the type by hand. I also wanted characters in the logo for people to relate to but I didn’t want something normal. I wanted the characters to be a bit odd. I think that was achieved. ha ha.

Enjoy the show!

A friend of mine asked me to draw him a tattoo. I’ve had a few people ask me to do that for them and I have always said no. Not sure why, I guess I wasn’t into tattoos. I appreciate them, but just not for me. When Noel asked me to draw him something I changed my mind on doing tattoos. I realized it’s the highest form of flattery to have someone tattoo your artwork on their body.

The idea behind the tat was show nobility and a pride. Almost like a warrior mask. I didn’t do pupils because I wanted people to focus on the entire piece, not just the eyes.
I find when you do pupils it’s always the first thing you see.

My original drawing was done in B&W. Noel worked with the tattoo artist and let him finish the tattoo the way he saw it. I think the final piece turned out beautifully.

1990 Acrylic and Watercolour by Lynn Reid

I think it’s time my mom was featured on the web. She was an amazing artist, from paintings to writing to sculpture. She painted everything, if you saw our home, you would see her touch in everything.

I remember huge wall murals she did for my sister and I in our bedrooms. If I remember correctly the first one she did for me, was a huge Star Wars painting that scared the shit out of me. It was beautiful though. Unfortunately because I was scared she painted over it. That must have been hard on her.

I’m not sure, but because of that mural it lead to her painting other peoples houses, restaurants, bathrooms, clothing, everything. She had her own company back in the day called ‘Creative Visuals’. I remember sitting with her one day when I was young and sketching out ideas for her logo. Even though I was young she still used elements of my sketch in her logo. That made me proud!

Her artwork is hard to come by these days, she’s hidden it somewhere in the house. Not sure why, the only thing I can guess is that she got bored of looking at her own work. But that’s just a guess.

My sister, Tiffaney Patmore surprised me this year for Christmas with a framed piece that our mom did. That was the most thoughtful gift I have ever received. It took a lot to hold back tears.

I was so worried that my mom threw out her art and that part of her passed away with her. I look at this painting everyday and think about her and the inspiration and talent that she has given my sister and myself. A lot of my art is based on ideas that my mom came up with years ago. Not in style but in medium.

My Alien Sculpture started as a head, than my mom said ‘Why not make the rest of it?’ She had made a fullsize merry go round horse that’s still at home. I still look at it and am in awe. That was the inspiration of scale and medium that began that project.

My sister and I are so lucky to have her talent. My sister’s artwork keeps blowing me away every time she does a new piece. Hopefully one day, she’ll allow me to share her art and feature it on my site. I think she’s like I used to be and was scared of people judging her art. But like I learned in school, art is meant to be seen and shared.

One last thing that I want to mention, is I think my mom would sign her art as Lynn Reid (her maiden name) because her art, as any artist, is about you and the brush or any medium you use. It was her identity through art.
